Chapter 14

MAXFIELD SAT with Edward at their usual table in the Pantheon while they waited for Albert, and yet again he wondered if his friends were losing their minds. Was he the only one with his feet firmly planted on the ground? The idea of such levelheaded men being made such suckers of by these whores was absurd, and indeed he would have been having a gay old time laughing about it if it weren’t happening to his own kin. Albert, he wasn’t too surprised at. His mild-mannered friend had a habit of leaping headfirst into the fray of love, but Edward? Maxfield could count on one hand the number of men Edward had held affections for, and none had lasted as long as this.

Maxfield believed in Edward, but Edward was good at seeing what he wanted to see rather than the reality in front of him. He couldn’t blame him, after everything he’d been through. Maxfield truly wanted to see Edward happy. He simply didn’t think he would find it with a man like Julius.

Neither of them had yet to spot the love god in question, and Maxfield could see Edward was growing more agitated by the minute. He also suspected being surrounded by chorus boys who were busy flirting, kissing, and getting up to all kinds of physical encounters wasn’t helping matters any. Suddenly Lawry came into their line of sight, and when Edward made to stand, Maxfield put a hand to his shoulder.

“I’ll go. You need to calm down before you end up flattening some poor sap’s nose.”

“I would do no such thing,” Edward said, looking insulted, but Maxfield wasn’t fooled. Edward might be the very image of the perfect gentleman, but no one knew what lay underneath such a composed, humble exterior. Edward might not remember having been subdued by several men during his darker period, but Maxfield remembered all too clearly. He doubted Edward would have such a relapse again, but there was no need to tempt fate. It was clear when it came to Julius, Edward wasn’t in control of all his senses.

“Of course not, but I want to do this. Please.”

“Fine. If you’re going to go, go already.” Edward sat back with a sulk, usually a result of knowing Maxfield was in the right.

Leaving him, Maxfield headed in Lawry’s direction. The dark-haired, dark-eyed love god watched his every move and his expression gave none of his thoughts away. At least this one wasn’t an incessant talker like Terry. Maxfield straightened, giving the ends of his expensive vest a tug, and did his best to appear blasé. No way in hell he was going to allow the conniving little worker to get the better of him. Grabbing Lawry’s arm, he dragged him into one of the empty darkened booths and shoved him down onto the velvet cushion.

“Pleasure to see you, as always,” Lawry said with a sultry smile. He shifted and patted the cushion beside him. When Maxfield didn’t sit, Lawry crossed his long legs at the ankles and leaned back to look up at him.
